According to the police, the accident resulted in the deaths of the driver, the conductor, a father and a teacher.
It is reported that 87 passengers, including a large number of school children, were in the bus at the time of the incident.
Following the accident, 78 persons who were injured were admitted to the Nuwara Eliya Hospital while nine others whose conditions were serious were transferred to the Kandy General Hospital.
Most of those who were injured in Wednesday afternoon's accident are reported to be school students.
The group were returning from Passara on an educational trip.
